Overview

The Egypt e-Visa is the Egyptian government's online travel authorisation for tourism, issued before you fly through the official electronic portal. It is open to nationals of more than seventy countries and lets you apply online and request entry for short visits without going to an embassy or queuing at a consulate. You choose one of two types: a single-entry e-Visa, valid for ninety days from issue and good for a stay of up to thirty days; or a multiple-entry e-Visa, valid for one hundred and eighty days and allowing several visits, each up to thirty days.

The authorisation covers tourism; it does not authorise paid work, study toward a qualification or long-term residence, which require the relevant visa category. Visa on arrival exists at major Egyptian airports for some nationalities, but availability varies and queues can be long, so securing the e-Visa before travel is the dependable route and is what airlines increasingly expect to see at check-in. The e-Visa is linked to the passport you apply with, so you must travel on that same document, and it is issued per traveller, including children.

Your Egypt e-Visa is prepared in your own language, the right details for your trip are requested, and every answer is checked against current Egyptian rules before it is submitted to the issuing authority, so a small mistake does not delay your approval. The e-Visa is intended for tourism and short visits; paid work, study or long-term stays require a different visa arranged through an Egyptian diplomatic mission before you travel.

Who can apply

The main eligibility conditions for this destination, and who can apply.

Available to nationals of more than 70 countries. Single-entry visas are valid for one visit up to 30 days; multiple-entry visas allow several visits within 180 days, each up to 30 days. Children need their own e-Visa.

What you'll need

Have these ready before you begin your application. Requirements can vary by nationality and trip purpose.

  • Passport with at least six months validity
  • Recent digital passport photograph
  • Travel itinerary including accommodation in Egypt
  • Return flight booking
  • Email address for e-Visa delivery
  • Payment method (one all-inclusive price)

Requirements in detail

The Egypt e-Visa asks for a clear set of documents, and every detail must match your passport exactly. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival, and you upload a scan of its biographical page, the one with your photo and personal details, so the data can be read accurately. You also provide a recent passport-style photograph on a plain light background, taken straight-on, with no glasses and no head covering except for religious reasons; a blurred, cropped or selfie-style image is a frequent cause of a held application.

Have your travel dates and your Egyptian accommodation address ready, along with a return or onward flight. A valid email address receives the approved e-Visa, and a payment card covers one all-inclusive price that includes the government fee and the service fee, with the government portion itemised on your receipt. The single most common avoidable error is a mistyped name or passport number: the e-Visa must read exactly as your passport does, because Egyptian border officers compare the two on arrival and a mismatch can cause delay or refused boarding.

The spelling, the dates and the document files are checked against the rules before submission, so the application reaches the authority clean.

Government processing time

What the issuing authority typically takes once the application is submitted.

Government processing: Egyptian Ministry of Interior decides in 1 to 7 business days. VisitPass review: Standard 1 to 3 business days; Rush 1 business day; Super Rush less than 6 hours. The application is checked for completeness, submitted to the authority, and the confirmation issued. When to apply: the Egyptian authority advises submitting at least one week before you travel, so applying two to three weeks ahead is recommended. Peak holiday periods and high tourist season can add a few days to the official decision, so if your departure is close, choose a faster review tier and start now rather than waiting until the last moment.

On arrival

Carry a printed copy of your approved Egypt e-Visa as well as a version on your phone. Egyptian airlines and border officers commonly ask to see the printed authorisation alongside your passport, and a paper copy avoids any problem with a flat battery or no signal. Travel on the exact passport you applied with, since the e-Visa is tied to that document.

The e-Visa lets you board and request entry, but the final admission decision rests with the immigration officer at the airport, who may ask about your trip. Have your accommodation address and your return or onward ticket ready to show, and keep a little cash in local currency for the arrivals area.

Planning your trip

Most first trips anchor on the antiquities: the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx outside Cairo, the temples and royal tombs around Luxor, and the High Dam and island temples at Aswan, often joined by a Nile cruise that links Luxor and Aswan over a few unhurried days. The Red Sea coast at Hurghada and Marsa Alam adds reefs, diving and beach time once the touring is done, while Cairo's bazaars and the Egyptian Museum reward an extra day. Alexandria on the Mediterranean and the Western Desert oases suit a longer, slower itinerary. The comfortable season runs from October to April, when daytime heat eases for sightseeing among open ruins; high summer is intense, especially in the south, where the Red Sea coast stays warm year round. Pack light, breathable clothing with a scarf or long sleeves for sun and for temple and mosque visits, sturdy shoes for uneven stone, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle, and keep small notes of local currency for entry tickets and tips.

Questions about this destination

Common questions specific to this visa. For broader topics see our help centre.

  • How long does the Egyptian e-Visa take?

Egyptian Ministry of Interior typically issues e-Visas within 1 to 7 business days. Our Rush tier reviews within 24 hours and submits with priority; Super Rush ships same-day.

  • Can I get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Visa on arrival is available at major Egyptian airports for some nationalities but the queues can be long and the system intermittent. The e-Visa secures your authorisation before travel and avoids the on-arrival queue.

  • What if I'm visiting only Sharm El-Sheikh?

South Sinai (including Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab and Nuweiba) has a separate Sinai-only visa stamp issued on arrival for stays up to 14 days. Our specialists will flag this in the wizard if your itinerary is limited to that region.

  • Refund policy if denied?

If your Egyptian e-Visa is denied for reasons outside your control, our service fee is refunded. The government fee is paid directly to the Egyptian authority and is non-refundable. Denial Protection is available for eligible cases.

  • Do I need a printed e-Visa to board?

Yes. We recommend carrying both a printed copy and a digital version. Egyptian border officials commonly request the printed authorisation alongside your passport.

  • How long is the Egypt e-Visa valid?

Single-entry visas are valid for one visit up to 30 days; multiple-entry visas allow several visits within 180 days, each up to 30 days. Children need their own e-Visa.

  • Is VisitPass an official Egyptian government site?

No. VisitPass is an independent visa-application service, not affiliated with the government of Egypt. You pay one all-inclusive price; the government fee is paid to the issuing authority and itemised on your receipt, and our service covers specialist review before submission.

  • Do US citizens need an Egypt e-Visa?

Yes. US citizens, like nationals of more than seventy countries, need the Egypt e-Visa before they travel for tourism. We confirm your nationality is on the eligible list, prepare the application in plain language and check every answer against current rules before submitting it to the Egyptian authority.

  • How much does the Egypt e-Visa cost?

You pay one all-inclusive price that includes the Egyptian government fee and our service fee, with no hidden charges and the government portion itemised on your receipt. The single-entry government fee is lower than the multiple-entry one; the government fee is paid directly to the issuing authority, while our fee covers reviewing and submitting your application.

  • What photo and documents does the application need?

You upload a scan of your passport biographical page and a recent passport-style photograph on a plain background, taken straight-on with no glasses or head covering except for religious reasons. Add your travel dates and Egyptian accommodation. We check the files are clear and correctly oriented before submission so the application is not held up.

  • Should I choose single-entry or multiple-entry?

A single-entry e-Visa suits one trip and is valid ninety days from issue, for a stay of up to thirty days. A multiple-entry e-Visa is valid one hundred and eighty days and lets you enter several times, each visit up to thirty days, which fits a regional itinerary that re-enters Egypt. We help you pick the right type in the wizard.

  • Can I extend my stay or the e-Visa in Egypt?

A tourist stay can sometimes be extended at a passport office inside Egypt, but that is handled locally and paid to the Egyptian authority, separately from VisitPass. The e-Visa itself is not extended online; for a longer or different purpose you apply again or through an Egyptian consulate. We share the current procedure in your confirmation email.

  • What are the common reasons an Egypt e-Visa is refused, and how do you prevent them?

Most problems come from small data errors rather than eligibility: a mistyped passport number, a name that does not match the passport exactly, an inconsistent date, a passport with under six months validity, or an unclear photo or bio-page scan. Before submission we compare every field against your passport, confirm the dates are consistent and check the uploaded files are legible, so these avoidable issues are caught and corrected first.

  • What proof of funds or onward travel do I need for Egypt?

The e-Visa application itself does not require uploaded bank statements, but an immigration officer can ask about your trip on arrival, so it is wise to carry proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket and access to sufficient funds for your stay. We collect your travel dates and Egyptian address in the form and remind you what to keep ready to show at the border in your confirmation email.

  • How do I know this is not a scam site?

VisitPass is an independent application service, not affiliated with the government of Egypt, and we say so plainly. You pay one all-inclusive price; the government fee is passed straight to the issuing authority and itemised on your receipt alongside our service fee. You are always free to apply directly on the official Egyptian portal; what you pay us for is preparing and reviewing the application and handling your details securely.

  • Can I transit through Egypt or use a Schengen visa to enter?

A short airport transit without leaving the controlled area may not need a visa, but if you clear immigration, see Cairo on a layover or take a connecting domestic flight you need a valid e-Visa. A Schengen visa does not grant entry to Egypt. If your plan involves a stopover or you are unsure, we confirm the right authorisation for your itinerary in the wizard before you pay.

  • When should I apply for the Egypt e-Visa?

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior decides in 1 to 7 business days, and the authority advises submitting at least a week before you travel. Apply once your trip is booked, ideally two to three weeks before departure so there is room for the decision and our review. Peak holiday periods and high tourist season can add a few days. If your flight is close, Rush and Super Rush tiers handle short-notice travel.
