Overview

The Rwanda e-Visa is the country's online entry authorisation for tourism, business and family visits, issued ahead of travel through the Irembo national portal. The standard tourist e-Visa is single entry, valid 30 days from your date of arrival, and permits a stay of up to 30 days, enough for a gorilla-trekking trip combined with Kigali and the lakes. It covers leisure and short business travel; it does not authorise paid employment, long-term study or residence, which run through separate visa categories.

Rwanda also offers a visa on arrival to citizens of every nationality, so an entry stamp can be obtained at Kigali airport without applying first. Even so, securing the e-Visa online before you board removes the uncertainty at the counter: your application is completed in full, reviewed before submission, and the approval reaches you by email, so you arrive with your entry already settled rather than queuing on landing tired. You travel on the same passport you apply with, and the authorisation links to its details, so they must match exactly.

Your Rwanda e-Visa is prepared in your own language, every field is checked against your travel documents, and it is submitted to the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration, then your confirmation is delivered so the entry step is one less thing to manage before a long-awaited trip.

Rwanda e-Visa questions

  • Do I need a Rwanda e-Visa, or can I get a visa on arrival?

Rwanda offers a visa on arrival to every nationality, so you can be stamped in at the airport without applying first. Applying for the e-Visa online beforehand still helps: your application is completed in full and reviewed before submission, the approval arrives by email, and you skip the uncertainty at the counter. We prepare it for you so arrival is smooth.

  • Is the Rwanda e-Visa free?

The standard tourist entry e-Visa carries a government fee, which is capped for single entry and paid to the Rwandan authority. Some passports qualify for a free visa on arrival under regional and partnership agreements, but that is a separate route obtained at the airport. You pay one all-inclusive price that includes the government fee and our service fee, with the government portion itemised on your receipt and no hidden charges.

  • How long does the Rwanda e-Visa take?

Rwandan Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration typically issues e-Visas within 1 to 5 business days of submission. Our Rush tier reviews within 24 hours; Super Rush ships same-day with status tracking.

  • Do I need a separate gorilla-trekking permit?

Yes. Gorilla-trekking permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board separately from the e-Visa and must be booked in advance through licensed tour operators. Our specialists note the procedure in your confirmation email but do not handle the permit itself.

  • Is the East African Tourist Visa different?

Yes. The East African Tourist Visa (EATV) covers Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda in a single 90-day multi-entry product. It is applied for through the country of first entry. Our current service covers the single-country Rwanda e-Visa only.

  • What if my Rwanda e-Visa is denied?

Most denials stem from passport validity or photo quality issues. Our specialists pre-check these before submission. If denied for reasons outside your control, our service fee is refunded; the government fee is non-refundable.

  • Is the e-Visa valid for all entry points?

Yes. Rwanda's e-Visa is valid at Kigali International Airport and authorised land border crossings with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the DRC. The wizard verifies your entry point against the current authorised list.

  • How long is the Rwanda e-Visa valid?

The e-Visa is valid for 30 days from arrival with single-entry use, covering tourism, business and family visits. Some passports qualify for visa-on-arrival, but the e-Visa secures entry before boarding.

  • What do I need to apply for the Rwanda e-Visa?

A passport valid at least six months, a recent photo, your travel details and a payment card. A specialist reviews your application before submission. Gorilla-trekking permits are booked separately with the park authority.

  • Do I need a passport photo for the Rwanda e-Visa?

Yes. A recent passport-style photograph is part of the standard e-Visa submission through the Irembo portal. Use a clear, recent image with a plain background and your full face visible. We check your photo against the current requirements before submission so a poor scan does not delay the application.

  • Do I need to print my Rwanda e-Visa before I travel?

It is best to travel with your approved e-Visa, either printed or saved on your phone, because the airline and the border post in Kigali may ask to see it. We deliver the approval by email so you can keep both a printed and a digital copy, along with your accommodation booking and return ticket, ready to show on arrival.

  • Is VisitPass an official government website?

No. VisitPass is an independent service that completes, reviews and submits your Rwanda e-Visa to the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration. We are not affiliated with the Rwandan government or the Irembo portal; you pay one all-inclusive price, with the government fee paid to the authority and itemised on your receipt.

  • How can I avoid having my Rwanda e-Visa refused?

Most avoidable problems come from small data errors: a name typed differently from the passport, a wrong passport number, an expiry date inside six months of travel, or a blurred photo. We review every field against your documents before submission and flag anything that looks off, so your Rwanda e-Visa application reaches the authority clean and the most common reasons for a refusal are caught early.

  • Do I need proof of funds or an onward ticket for the Rwanda e-Visa?

The standard Rwanda e-Visa form asks for your accommodation and travel details rather than bank statements, but a confirmed booking and a return or onward flight strengthen your application and may be requested at the border. We list these in your document checklist and prompt you for them while you apply, so you arrive with the supporting papers a Kigali immigration officer might want to see.

  • Do I need a yellow-fever certificate for Rwanda?

A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from, or who have recently transited, a country where yellow fever is present, and the certificate is separate from the Rwanda e-Visa. Health rules change, so check your route against current guidance before you travel and carry the certificate with your passport. We note the requirement in your confirmation but do not issue medical documents.

  • When should I book my gorilla-trekking permit for Rwanda?

Gorilla-trekking permits for Volcanoes National Park are limited each day and sell out in peak season, so book yours early through a licensed operator, ideally before you finalise dates. The permit is arranged separately from the Rwanda e-Visa, which covers your entry only. We can file your e-Visa around the trek dates you have confirmed, so your authorisation and your itinerary line up.

  • When should I apply for the Rwanda e-Visa?

The Rwandan Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration usually decides within 1 to 5 business days of submission through the Irembo portal. File the e-Visa once your dates and accommodation are settled, ideally a couple of weeks before departure, so the approval is in hand well before check-in. Peak travel periods can add time, and the Rush and Super Rush tiers are available when your trip is close.
